The mechanism for an Olefin Metathesis reaction in which two olefins (alkenes) rearrange to form two new carbon-carbon double bonds while in the process, forming multiple four-membered ring transition states. This reaction is often carried out with various Ruthenium catalysts such as Grubbs catalyst, or other transition metal catalysts such as Schrock catalysts. The mechanism shown here involves two separate alkenes involved in the reaction, however, this process is also possible intramolecularly in order to perform ring closing and opening reactions.
