For the score, Tyler didn't want to just constantly reference the older game music without having any new themes or thematic structure of it's own, so he composed new themes for the main characters of the film to add some new material that not only fit the musical world of the film, but could also be used in place of referential game music to prevent people from being distracted by familiar tunes. His main theme is ridiculously catchy, and at points sounded like a Koji Kondo theme due to it's similar rhythm and style. The theme is built upon a repeating four note beat, an ostinato underlying the main theme and adding a constant flow and momentum. Building off of an initial five note phrase, Mario's theme is very jovial, upbeat, and lively, much like the music of the games. While it sounds energetic, punchy, and all around fun, it does have a heroic, triumphant tone whenever it needs to be heroic. Tyler also uses string instruments like the violin or mandolin to help give the theme more of a class and fitting Italian air, not only adding to the theme's diverse possibilities but also Mario's Italian roots. Tyler even mixes in sounds from the games in some of the tracks, most notable example being the entirety of Press Start. Altogether, Tyler's theme for the Mario Brothers is memorable and catchy, not only being a loving tribute to Kondo's work, but also being heroic and triumphant enough to really portray the cinematic, grandiose feel the film itself exudes.
