This was supposed to be a different post but I had to move it to next week after I heard the sad news that English producer and musician William Orbit had passed away; he was a brilliant producer who made his own unique mark in the electronica genre, and for me, his most spectacular work was this track, the title track of Madonna's 1998 album, "Ray Of Light," which is a reworked version of "Sepheryn," a song originally recorded in 1971 by the English folk music duo Curtiss Maldoon, then as a demo by Christine Leach. Starting with soft guitars and slowly swirling synths, the track explodes into an oscillating aural soundscape filled with electronic bleeps and burbles that is just pure awesomeness--this was Madonna at her peak, with vocals that were trained during the filming of "Evita" and she put it into good use here. The music video is equally stunning, featuring a fast motion time-lapse of various events occurring during a single day as it transitions from day into night. This masterpiece is actually my all-time favorite Madonna song from my all-time favorite Madonna album, and also my all-time favorite Madonna music video--a 3 for 3 win, LOL. "Ray Of Light" went to #5 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart in 1998, and also became a #1 hit on the Dance charts. In the UK, the song peaked at #2 on the UK Pop chart.
