Subnautica 2 has a lot of disturbing lore about dead colonists, black boxes, missing people, alien infection, and the mystery of what happened before the player arrived. But actual human remains are extremely rare. Most of the “remains” you find in Subnautica 2 are old black boxes left behind after previous colonists died.
In this guide, I’ll show you where to find all 3 human dead bodies currently hidden in Subnautica 2, along with the creepy lore and theories behind each one.
Most of the deaths you investigate in Subnautica 2 happened around 28 to 30 years before your character arrives, which makes it strange that any bodies would still be left at all. In acidic, salty ocean water, most human remains should disappear over time. That makes these three bodies stand out even more, especially because each one appears to have been preserved in a different way.
The first human body is found right at the start of the game. Just outside the first couple of rooms where your character wakes up, you can find an EVA suit with a body inside hanging nearby. It looks like this person may have tried to escape in a hurry, forgot or failed to activate their oxygen supply, ran out of air, suffocated, and was left hanging there.
This body is especially interesting because there is a theory that it may not just be a random dead colonist. It could possibly be one of your character’s previous printed bodies. The player is the “qualified investigator,” but there are hints that this may not be the first time your character has been printed out on Protea. If that is true, the robot in charge may have wiped your memory after a previous incident, leaving this EVA suit corpse as a possible clue that you have died here before.
The second body is found straight east of the Lifepod in a small cave. This corpse is completely encased in coral and hanging from the ceiling with a light on it. The whole scene feels extremely deliberate, almost like a reference to the famous Star Wars scene where Luke Skywalker is hanging from the ceiling inside an ice cave after being attacked by a dangerous creature.
This coral-covered body is one of the creepiest human remains in Subnautica 2 because it looks less like a normal corpse and more like the environment has slowly claimed it. Instead of rotting away normally, the body has become part of the cave, sealed in coral and left hanging like a warning.
The third body is found in the hot caves. To reach it, head roughly 105 degrees / east-ish from the Lifepod until you reach the Tailings Village. In the middle of the Tailings Village is the entrance to the hot caves. Go down into the cave system, hang a right, and head toward the center area beneath the tall volcano. There is a hole under the volcano, and straight inside you can find the third body.
This body is completely encased in minerals and fossilized. It appears to have curled up in the fetal position, almost like they laid down to enjoy the warmth before dying. But the hot caves are tied to one of the darker pieces of Subnautica 2 lore: everyone who ended up down there eventually died of Maisfield Syndrome and never came back out again.
That makes the hot caves body especially tragic. It is not just another corpse. It looks like someone who was sick, exhausted, confused, or infected, and eventually curled up in the warmth until the cave preserved them in mineral deposits.
