Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade and Minister for Defence Helen McEntee said there is strong commitment from a significant number of EU Member States to maintain or introduce a presence on the ground in Lebanon.
Speaking during the press conference Q&A after the Informal Meeting of Defence Ministers in Druids Glen, County Wicklow, Ireland, McEntee said several proposals are being considered for a future mission.
She noted that Ireland, Austria and Spain have put forward proposals looking at the possibility of a civilian mission, combined with an element of force protection.
McEntee said the mission should support the Lebanese Armed Forces, the Lebanese government, and also include civilian and training elements.
She warned that as troops begin to withdraw, Europe must not allow a security gap to open in Lebanon.
According to McEntee, agreement is needed as soon as possible, including clarity on what contributions individual Member States can make.
Her warning was practical and urgent: Lebanon needs continued international support, and Europe must move quickly to avoid leaving the Lebanese people and institutions exposed.
