Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke in Quebec about the ongoing trade war with the United States, warning that U.S. tariffs and trade pressure threaten one of the most successful industrial partnerships in history.

Carney said it was not a surprise that the United States would take some form of reprisal after Canada responded to what he called unjustified tariffs.

But he asked what message this sends to workers in Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky and Alabama, whose jobs depend on Canadian demand.

Carney stressed that Canada is the largest customer for U.S. automobiles, buying more than the European Union, Japan, Korea, the United Kingdom and others combined.

He described the North American automotive partnership as the most successful automotive partnership in history, built over 60 years.

According to Carney, the terms offered by the United States would have gradually damaged the Canadian auto industry — and Canada refused to accept them.

He said a mutually beneficial deal is still possible, but only if it respects Canada’s sovereignty, Canada’s independence, and the shared strengths of both countries.

Carney’s message was clear: Canada is ready to cooperate, but not at the cost of its workers, families or industrial future.
