Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade and Minister for Defence Helen McEntee said Ireland will be part of a future CSDP mission in Lebanon.
Speaking at the Informal Meeting of Defence Ministers in Druids Glen, County Wicklow, McEntee said ministers would hear more details on what the mission could look like.
She expressed profound regret that the UNIFIL mission is coming to an end, stressing that some form of peacekeeping presence on the ground remains essential.
McEntee said Irish troops, alongside others, are needed to support the Lebanese Armed Forces and, above all, the Lebanese people.
But she also made a firm point about national sovereignty: Ireland must be able to decide for itself where it places its peacekeeping troops.
She said it is not for any other country, anywhere in the world, to decide where Ireland deploys its forces.
McEntee highlighted Ireland’s long and proud tradition of peacekeeping, force protection and training missions on the ground — and said she hopes that tradition will continue in Lebanon.
