An EU spokesperson explained the latest step in the European Union’s €90 billion support package for Ukraine, focused on defence and budget support.
The spokesperson said the process has two stages: first, the approval of production schedules, and then the actual disbursement of funds.
In the latest decision, the EU approved seven production schedules in total.
Before money can be disbursed, Ukraine must send the signed contracts with the relevant defence industry operators. The Commission will then analyse and approve those contracts before releasing the corresponding funds.
The spokesperson stressed that this round is especially important because it is the first time under the €90 billion package that the EU is approving anti-ballistic capabilities for Ukraine.
The package also covers missiles, ammunition and radars, strengthening Ukraine’s ability to defend itself against Russian attacks.
The Commission said it cannot disclose confidential details of the production schedules, but confirmed that there is no derogation in this round — meaning the military hardware will be produced either in the European Union or in Ukraine.
