An EU Commission spokesperson said the European Union remains opposed to tariffs, describing them as taxes that ultimately end up being paid by importers and consumers.
Asked about EU-Canada relations, the spokesperson said both the United States and Canada are important trade partners for the European Union.
The Commission said it continues to work closely with both partners to maintain stability and predictability in transatlantic and global trade.
On the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, the spokesperson said EU cooperation with CPTPP partners is strategically important for advancing a modern, rules-based trading system.
The Commission said this system must be based on fair, free and non-discriminatory trade, especially in today’s unstable geopolitical context.
The EU has already launched its first EU-CPTPP Trade and Investment Dialogue, focusing on five priority areas: trade diversification, digital trade, trade and investment facilitation, supply chain resilience and the global trade environment, including WTO reform.
Together, the EU and CPTPP account for 32% of global GDP and 33% of global trade, making the partnership highly important for Europe’s trade strategy.
