An EU spokesperson strongly condemned remarks by Israeli Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir concerning Gaza, saying the language used was unacceptable and should not be left unchecked.
The spokesperson said the Israeli government has a responsibility to rein in such rhetoric, especially when it comes from a minister.
The EU also recalled that there is currently a proposal in the Council to include Ben-Gvir on the sanctions list under the Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime.
Asked about children, the spokesperson stressed that civilians, particularly children, must be protected at all times in accordance with international humanitarian law.
The EU also recalled that Israel has an obligation under international law to protect the Palestinian population in the occupied territory.
On the political horizon, the spokesperson reaffirmed the EU’s position that there is no alternative to the two-state solution: two democratic states, Israel and Palestine, living side by side in peace and security within secure and recognised borders.
