Irish Foreign Minister and Minister for Defence Helen McEntee expressed full solidarity with Germany, Estonia, Romania, Latvia, Poland and other European countries facing recent Russian-linked activity and incursions.
Speaking at the Informal Meeting of Foreign Affairs Ministers — Gymnich in Druids Glen, County Wicklow, Ireland, McEntee said this was the first meeting of EU foreign ministers after a summer of increased activity.
She warned that Europe is no longer talking only about hybrid threats, but about significant hostile activity.
McEntee said ministers must focus not only on continuing support for Ukraine and increasing pressure on Russia, but also on how Europe responds to these threats inside its own borders.
She warned that Russia is clearly trying to divide EU Member States, divide citizens and spread fear across European societies.
But her message was firm: Europe must respond effectively, refuse to be divided and keep its support for Ukraine steadfast.
As holder of the EU Presidency, Ireland has put security front and centre, McEntee said, with the goal of ensuring that Europeans remain safe and secure.
Her warning was clear: Russia wants fear and division. Europe’s answer must be unity, solidarity and unwavering support for Ukraine.
