Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke in Quebec about the ongoing trade war with the United States, saying Canada is ready to negotiate — but only with the right attitude from Washington.
Carney said Canada will come to the negotiating table when the United States approaches talks with respect for Canadian industries and a real spirit of partnership.
He said the existing trade arrangement between Canada, the United States and Mexico works, and can be improved in ways that benefit Canadians, Americans and Mexicans.
But Carney strongly rejected any approach that treats Canada as a subsidiary of the United States.
He said Canada will not accept terms that disadvantage Canadian industry, create long-term headwinds for Canadian businesses, or restrict Canada’s ability to sign trade deals with the rest of the world.
Asked about shipbuilding and icebreakers, Carney said the latest tariffs do not weaken Canada’s programme — they reinforce it.
He stressed that Canadian steel and Canadian expertise give Canada a strategic advantage, especially in building world-class icebreakers.
Carney also reminded Washington that the United States needs Canada’s Arctic and shipbuilding expertise.
His message was firm: Canada wants partnership with America, but only on terms that work for Canadian workers, Canadian industries and Canadian sovereignty.
