How To Make the Last Word (Perfected)
1 oz Gin
1 oz Green Chartreuse
1 oz Maraschino
1 oz Fresh Lime juice
2 Dashes Cherry Bitters
The Last Word has undergone modifications over the years. Some prefer a juniper-forward gin to stand up against the strong Chartreuse and Maraschino, while others opt for a lighter gin to counterbalance those bold flavors.
Many also experiment with the ratios, reducing the amount of liqueur to make the cocktail drier.
I agree that the Last Word can benefit from a little tweak, but for me, the true magic lies in adding a couple of dashes of cherry bitters. We don't talk about it enough, but bitters do more than just add layers of flavor or enhance a particular note—they can also help dry out sweeter drinks. This way, you achieve a slightly drier cocktail while maintaining the intensity of the other ingredients, resulting in what I believe is a much better drink. Hope you enjoy this little hack. Cheers!
