Our 5-year long RV road trip to every corner of America had to start somewhere so we figured why not start in Mayberry, USA (aka Mt. Airy, NC)?

KULT News spent the first nine days of March (2024) in the town that was the inspiration for the fictional tv town of Mayberry from the Andy Griffith Show.

Not only is Mt. Airy, NC the birthplace and hometown of American actor Andy Griffith, it’s also the adopted home town of the infamous nineteenth-century Siamese twins, Chang and Eng Bunker. We were able to get a sneak peek of the soon-to-be opened Siamese Twins Museum during our stay in town and we got to meet and mingle with the local residents as well. We got to know the proprietor of the local ice cream soda fountain and sang karaoke with local residents on Friday night.

Although we found almost everyone in Mt. Airy to be friendlier than Otis the town drunk with a fresh batch of moonshine in his belly, it wasn’t all moonshine and ice cream sodas during our stay in Mayberry. We did encounter a handful of local public servants who claimed to be “frightened” by our cameras while we were out in public as well as a county attorney who seemed to be woefully ignorant of the law. Would local law enforcement keep calm in the face of our frightening cameras or would they behave like Barney Fife on a power trip?

Laws may vary but, generally speaking, in the United States, if you are in public you are legally able to photograph whatever you can see. Simply put, your eyes can’t be trespassed. Obviously there are some restrictions on this (i.e., bathrooms, dressing rooms, most courtrooms, locker rooms, etc.) but very few when you are in public. If you can see it, you can shoot it (this rule only applies to cameras.) This is not legal advice.
