The mechanism for a dihydroxylation reaction using Potassium Permanganate (KMnO4). An alkene is used as the starting material to yield a diol product. Important to note is that in this reaction, the KMnO4 must be used under cold conditions and with a base in order to obtain the diol. If this reagent is used with an alkene along with water and under warm conditions, an aldehyde will be formed.
