The mechanism for a Bernthsen reaction in which a diarylamine is reacted with a carboxylic acid, along with a Lewis acid in Zinc Chloride as well as heat, in order to synthesize a 9-substituted acridine. Acridines are useful compounds specifically in the medicinal field and often they can be synthesized via a Friedel-Crafts reaction. Often times heat is needed in excess of 250°C for the Bernthsen reaction to take place and often the yield is very poor. However, recent research has shown that conducting this reaction in a microwave has decreased the reaction time and increased the yield.
