The Mechanism for the synthesis of 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) by using 4-cyanopyridine, acrylic acid, and dimethyl amine. DMAP is a nitrogen base that is more basic than pyridine that is used in organic synthesis. It is possible to synthesize DMAP by a two step process starting with pyridine, which involves an oxidation step before reacting with dimethyl amine. However, the reaction for which the mechanism presented here represents results in a higher yield of product as well as high purity. Furthermore, the reaction conditions here are mild and suitable for large scale synthesis. This reaction mechanism involves the quaternization of 4-cyanopyridine with acrylic acid in order to obtain the intermediate before reacting with dimethyl amine.
