Kevin Costner says 'Yellowstone' return isn't out of the cards: 'I would go back'

Even if his attention is on "Horizon," Kevin Costner hasn't completely ruled out a comeback for "Yellowstone."

The Academy Award–winning actor acknowledged that, despite their unusual past with Taylor Sheridan, John Dutton might very well feature in his future.

Prior to the premiere of "Horizon: An American Saga," CBS Sunday Morning inquired about Costner's interest in returning to "Yellowstone."

"Yes, I would go back if I liked the story and where it was going," Costner said.

He went on to say that he didn't have to leave the program in order to finish shooting "Horizon."

"I did everything that I was contracted to do with 'Yellowstone,'" remarked Costner.

While wrangling with ex-wife Christine Baumgartner about child support payments, Costner, 69, made vague references to a potential legal clash over money he is owed from his time on "Yellowstone" while Fox News Digital was present in the courtroom. Speaking extensively about the controversy surrounding "Yellowstone" season 5, Costner did so prior to a September court ruling in favor of the actor regarding monthly child custody payments.

Costner reportedly felt that "Yellowstone" was not the right time to film since he preferred to concentrate on "Horizon." During the "critical" stage of post-production, the first installment of the four-part story was being worked on. Costner underlined, "I'm here," from the stand.

He remarked of the "Yellowstone" filming process, "Somewhere along the line they wanted to change things." "What they desired to do was 5A and 5B. "Horizon" was impacted. My plan was to film "Horizon," end that show, work on my own film, and then work on "B."

He said, "A show I was only doing once a year, I was now doing twice."

Costner clarified that prior to scheduling issues leading to the cancellation of the show, he had been promised $24 million to film "Yellowstone" seasons 5, 6, and 7.

Costner said, "I will probably go to court over it," in response to a question from his ex-wife's attorney over whether he had gotten payment for the most recent seasons of "Yellowstone."

After settling their divorce, he dedicated all of his time, resources, and energy on "Horizon," which opens nationwide on June 28. Less than a month later, on August 16, the second installment of the drama set after the Civil War opens in theaters.

"I'm alright. "I too am like a wagon heading west," Costner remarked to CBS. "I've encountered every conceivable situation. I have an agreement with the audience that requires me to give them something, so I have to hang onto the rope. They should head west, please."

In February, Costner unveiled the first trailer for the four-part drama set after the Civil War. It depicted the Wild West frontier that has been associated with his name for many years, ever since he directed "Dances with Wolves" in his directorial debut.

Not only did Costner star in the movie, but he also directed "Horizon," which was based on a screenplay he co-wrote with John Baird. However, Kevin wasn't the only Costner to receive a credit in the film. In addition to making his film debut, Hayes Logan Costner, his 15-year-old son, served as the impetus for his father to eventually produce the film.

"When I saw Hayes at the age of 13, I knew I had to film this movie. I'm going to make that movie because I want him in it. That was all," said Costner.

The first three-minute teaser for "Horizon" did not reveal the movie's concept; instead, Costner focused on showcasing the stunning landscape of the American Southwest and its ensemble cast, which included Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Giovanni Ribisi, Jena Malone, and Abbey Lee.

The lineup of celebrities includes Michael Rooker, Danny Huston, Luke Wilson, Isabelle Fuhrman, Jeff Fahey, Will Patton, Tatanka Means, Owen Crow Shoe, and Ella Hunt.

Even though these tales are a little harder to hear, he has remained dedicated to sharing the true stories of the west.

These villages didn't suddenly appear out of nowhere like mushrooms do. "They were battled for," stated Costner. This territory was disputed, and the Native Americans' journey was never pretty. These themes include that, even though I'm ashamed of how it happened and humiliated by it, I'm not scared to talk about it. I enjoy it.

Costner paid around $20 million for the picture out of his own pocket, which was revealed in court records when his ex-wife, Christine Baumgartner, filed for divorce in May 2023 after 18 years of marriage. The movie was expensive.

Later on, Costner explained that the actual amount was far higher.

He said to GQ magazine, "I know they say I got $20 million of my own money in this movie." "That is untrue. As of right now, the film has roughly $38 million. That is the actuality. That is the actual figure.
