Kevin Costner's Horizon: An American Saga Gets Massive Runtime

It has been rumored that moviegoers eager to see Kevin Costner's much awaited Western epic, Horizon: An American Saga, may have to wait a long in theaters. At least one of the two parts of the film series has a huge runtime, according to a recent report.

A source close to Horizon tells Deadline that one of the two films being released this summer will be a "3-hour Western," however it's unclear if Chapter 1 or Chapter 2 will be that 180 minutes long. The insider also discussed Horizon's potential at the box office, asserting that it will "either be a $5 M or a $100 M movie."

According to Costner, the four-part Horizon film series will run for almost eleven hours, which means viewers will spend a lot of time seated during the narrative. When the release dates for the first two chapters were revealed in October of last year, the total runtime was verified. Despite having a three-hour duration, Western films typically have longer runs because of the intricate storylines they feature.

Costner has had a long-standing passion project called Horizon. He first came up with the concept and had it commissioned as a stand-alone film in 1988. In 2003, he approached Disney to discuss developing the project further. In 2022, the movie series was officially confirmed, and Warner Bros. was signed on to distribute it. While production for Chapter Two began and finished last summer, principal photography for Chapter One was conducted in August and November of 2022. Shooting for Chapter Three was supposed to start last year, but because of WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the project was put on hold.

The first Horizon trailer, which debuted in February, gave fans a first look at the movie's A-list ensemble, which includes Sam Worthington, Sienna Miller, Michael Rooker, and Giovanni Ribisi. The movie series, which is set during the American Civil War, shows how the American West was expanding and the conflicts that occurred at that time. Costner, the well-known actor well remembered for his win the well Director Academy Award for Dances With Wolves, is the director of Horizon, his most recent film. Because of his Golden Globe-winning performance as John Dutton in Yellowstone, he also has a wealth of expertise in the Western genre. Costner recently expressed his wish to go back to Yellowstone for Season 5 Part 2, citing arguments with co-creator Taylor Sheridan and a financial dispute with Paramount as reasons for his desire.

Cannes is where Horizon is going.
On May 19, Horizon will also make its Cannes Film Festival debut, with Costner present. According to reports, the first two movies in the film series cost $100 million.

While Chapter 2 debuted on August 16, Chapter 1 releases in theaters on June 28.
