Kevin Costner's Horizon 2 Was Supposed To Release Today - So What's Going On Now?

Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 2, starring Kevin Costner, was set to open in theaters today, but both film and its two planned sequels now face an uncertain future. Since the Academy Award winner's passion project is a two-part story, the sequel was supposed to be released immediately after the first chapter, which was released at the end of June. Each of the individual story threads in Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 ended with an expectation that the viewer would be able to pick them up in a matter of weeks.

The film Horizon failed to connect with the wider public, even with its outstanding Western cinematography and ensemble. With a budget of approximately $50 million, Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 failed miserably at the box office, making only $34.3 million. An further $50 million was allocated for the production of Chapter 2. The entire franchise was put on shaky footing when Chapter 2 was given an extended theatrical delay following the failure of Chapter 1 to create an impression.

The Reason Behind the Retraction of Horizon 2's Original August 16, 2024 Release Date.

Kevin Costner has been pursuing the Horizon: An American Saga franchise in Hollywood for over thirty years. He famously leveraged assets to get the necessary funds for the project, using his personal funds to make it a reality. Following a poor run at the box office, Chapter 1 was released on video on demand (VOD) ahead of schedule in the hopes that streaming would attract more viewers. Since the numbers didn't support that, it was finally decided to postpone the release of Chapter 2 until August 16, 2024.

Now that Chapter 1 has shown such poor returns, the entire future of Horizon: An American Saga is uncertain. Because the first movie couldn't even pay for its own production costs, Costner and the Horizon team had to reassess their financial situation. Originally, they planned to use the box office proceeds from the first two chapters to finance the creation of the third and fourth chapters. In addition to providing the crew more time to come up with a different approach for the series, delaying the theatrical release of Chapter 2 should help prevent another box office catastrophe.

Though a theatrical release has not yet been confirmed, Horizon 2 will have its Venice Film Festival premiere.

The new goal is for Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 2 to proceed in a manner akin to that of Chapter 1, which debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2024 before going on general release. According to Costner, he always intended for Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 2 to have its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September.

Showing Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter Two at the Venice Film Festival has long been my dream. The fact that they have now chosen to screen Chapter One in the morning and then host the world premiere of Chapter Two in the evening demonstrates their support for the director's vision in addition to their belief in the way the two films complement one another.

The world debut of Chapter 2 at the esteemed Venice Film Festival is a testament to the brilliance of the expansive epic, or at the very least, a testament to Costner's confidence. It should be quite obvious why Costner chose to make his film festival debut in order to generate buzz and favorable reviews for the sequel before it opens wider. It remains to be seen if it will work, and as of right now, there's no assurance that Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 2 will ever play in a theater.

Will Horizon 3 & 4 Star Kevin Costner?

Although the franchise may benefit in the long run from the delay of Chapter 2, it raises serious concerns for the future of the other sequels in the short term. Despite Costner giving the first two films his all, it has been stated that the lack of funding has caused production on Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 3 to stagnate. Because there wasn't enough money for all four parts, planning a four-part plot was always going to be a dice throw, but Costner was prepared to try because he really believed in the concept.

Regretfully, there is a good chance that neither Chapter 3 nor Chapter 4 will ever be finished. The completion of Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 2 will be crucial in determining whether the franchise reaches Costner's initial four-film vision, and it is impossible to predict the prospects for Chapters 3 and 4 in the absence of a theatrical release. The immediacy that Costner initially planned appears unattainable now, but it's feasible that the series is completed in some fashion in the future—either in the shape of an abbreviated movie or in episodic television format.
