How Will Yellowstone Continue Without John Dutton? Kevin Costner Shares His Take On The Matter

It's old news that Kevin Costner will not be portraying John Dutton in the last episodes of Yellowstone's fifth season. But there are still unanswered concerns about how the show will go on without him. The guy behind the Dutton patriarch is coming up on how the show can go on without him as the debut date of November 10th draws near. Fans are eager to see how Taylor Sheridan's Western develops.

Naturally, we won't know for sure how Kevin Costner's character John Dutton will be portrayed in the series until Season 5B debuts in November of 2024 on the television schedule. But in his absence, Kelly Reilly's Beth, Luke Grimes's Kayce, Wes Bentley's Jamie, Cole Hauser's devoted ranchand, manager Beth's husband Rip will be leading the Yellowstone ensemble. Although they have always been crucial to the plot, it appears that they are now the main focus, and Costner told ET that this is the way the tale should go.

Of course, it can continue because, well, I have kids. You then center the tale around them.

Costner, I believe, is expressing what we're all thinking. This season has a lot of promise because of the popularity of previous Yellowstone programs and the effect that losing a major character can have on the program.

Let's now analyze why this show can succeed if it concentrates on the children. Remember how the upheaval that ensued after the death of their patriarchs made for fantastic plots in television series like Succession and Game of Thrones? I've supported writing off John even before Costner's official exit because of shows like those. The kids' struggle to decide who will take over the ranch would intensify dramatically in the wake of John's perhaps unexpected death, throwing the ranch into a new spin.

Writing John off makes a lot of sense when it comes to increasing his kids' stories—from raising the stakes on Jamie and Beth's quarrel to enhancing Rip's role on the ranch to making Kayce face his inner conflict over choosing his family or the ranch.

In addition, Taylor Sheridan's two earlier Yellowstone series, 1923 and 1883, have demonstrated that readers are eager to read about the Dutton family as a whole, rather than just John Dutton. In addition, after four and a half seasons, viewers have developed a deep affection for John's children, the boys from the bunkhouse, and the complete ensemble of supporting roles in this contemporary Western. Thus, yes, I believe everything will proceed smoothly in his absence.

The door may not be completely shut, though. In addition to speculating on the possibility of a sixth season of Yellowstone, Kelly Reilly confirmed that talks were taking place, and Cole Hauser expressed his desire to play Rip more, Costner offered his thoughts on his own future with Sheridan's main program:

Who knows, maybe things will come full circle. I haven't noticed that dust track approaching me, you know. But since the beginning, I've been receptive to it. That was a lot for us to do in five seasons. In my opinion, the narrative is not yet over.

He was immediately followed by remarks stating that the show might continue with just his on-screen kids. Therefore, it's doubtful that he will return as John Dutton. The door feels more like it's just cracked than it does like it's proudly standing ajar, even though it is technically open. Thus, I'm not holding out much hope for Kevin Costner's return.

But I'm starting to get excited about the Season 5 finale episodes! The show's focus on John's children is something I'm eager to see happen, and I'm dying to know what will happen to the ranch that the Dutton family has owned for well over a century.

Fortunately, Season 5B of Yellowstone will debut on the Paramount Network on November 10, so we won't have to wait much longer to see this eagerly anticipated tale.
