On September 10, 2025. A deputy from the Polk County Sheriff’s Department attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a motorcycle with two occupants for speeding. When the deputy activated his emergency lights, the motorcycle initially began slowing down before quickly accelerating away from the squad car. While the Motorcycle was fleeing, one of the subjects tossed a pack of cigarettes with a small container of a crystalline substance that later tested positive for the presence of methamphetamine.
The motorcycle briefly slowed down again and the passenger jumped off and ran into a field on foot. The pursuit reached speeds in excess of 90mph before the motorcycle pulled into a cornfield. The deputy continued after and observed the motorcycle on its side with nobody around it. The deputy decided to utilize his K9 partner in an attempt to track the subject. K9 Bane tracked a scent to the edge of the field and eventually all the way to a nearby house. Deputies secured a perimeter and observed fresh shoe prints leading to the front door.
Deputies began shouting commands for anyone inside to exit the residence. A man named Phillip walked outside and stated that he had no idea what was going on. Deputies noted that Phillip was sweaty, and had “drenched feet”. Phillip was detained and stated that it was likely his brother Chris, who was in a camper next to the house. When deputies approached the camper, one deputy observed a wet pair of gloves and recognized them as the same gloves worn by the subject who had fled. Phillip stated that he and Chris don't get along and deputies knocked on the camper multiple times with no response.
When deputies opened the door, they observed Chris laying on the floor sweating profusely. They immediately recognized that Chris was the same subject that had fled on the motorcycle. He was ordered to roll onto his stomach and place his hands behind his back. Chris rolled onto his stomach and was secured in handcuffs after a short struggle. While escorting Chris out of the camper, a deputy observed a baggy of a crystalline substance on the table which later tested positive for the presence of methamphetamine.
Deputies read Chris his Miranda rights and he agreed to talk. Chris admitted to being the motorcycle operator and stated that he did not need an ambulance. When asked who the passenger was, Chris initially stated that he only knew him by the name “China Man”, but later identified them as Ryan. Chris stated that they drove through his dads cornfield and that he only fled because Ryan told him to. Deputies thanked the brother Phillip for his cooperation and released him from custody without any charges.
The pursuit covered approximately 2.7 miles, and the K9 tracked Chris for approximately 0.68 miles. Chris was found guilty for Vehicle Operator Fleeing or Eluding an Officer and Possession of Methamphetamine. He was sentenced to 1 year in jail and 6 years of probation. The passenger was never located and did not face any charges.
