Peter Helland looks at the gospel story that began with God executing the death sentence upon Adam and Eve after they disobeyed His command. He then chooses Abraham to bring in His Son and redemption. Abraham had to first past the test of whether he himself was capable of ruling his house even to the point of killing his own son. God then finally sends God the Son to be put to death for Adam's sin. And not so strangely Jesus rebukes the Jewish leaders as hypocrites for refusing to obey a very important commandment. The command was "Honor your father and mother and whoever curses his father and mother is surely to be put to death." The book of James says that Abraham was justified when he offered up Isaac to be killed. The book of Romans says Abraham was justified by faith apart from works. Paul and James so appear to contradict each other that both Scofield and Luther said that the book of James was not for Christians. The conclusion of Peter's talk is all cultures must have their men rule their homes well if that wish to prosper. They must be able to command fear and respect from their wives and children to be successful in raising godly children. Who would have thought a couple hundred years ago that this truth would be forgotten so quickly?
