Peter Helland tries to interpret and apply the scripture in Deuteronomy 24:5: "When a man hath taken a new wife, he shall not go out to war, neither shall he be charged with any business: but he shall be free at home one year, and shall cheer up his wife which he hath taken." American Christians generally have failed to take many of the old testament scriptures seriously because they do not want to come under the "law". But St. Paul wrote: 28 "Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law. 31 Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law." Peter keeps reading from Henry Brownson's graduation speech at Notre Dame University in 1897. Brownson tells the students that America is really in trouble from the anti-Christian principles brought in by the northern victory over the south. He says the only hope is for the students to go out and seriously live the Christian life amidst a culture basically going to hell in a hand basket. What would he say today to this year's graduation class?
