Peter calls this presentation “Aristotle, Aquinas, Nietzsche, Peterson.” He continues to hammer away on Aquinas and how he gave way for the church to think of Eutrapelia as a virtue. Aristotle called Eutrapelia “educated or chastened insolence.” Eutrapelia is obviously a vice because for Christians pride is always bad. Aristotle wants pride to be part of all the virtues because pride was the crown of the virtues for him. Thomas Aquinas set out on an impossible mission of Christianizing Aristotle. Only the meek and humble inherit the new earth and the proud will all go to hell. The two do not mix.
Aristotle tutored King Phillip’s son Alexander and taught him that pride was the crown of the virtues. Alexander then with much arrogance proceeds to call himself a god and conquer the world. Nietzsche seems to have copied Aristotle and tried to produce his own Alexander called the Ubermensch which then turned out to be Hitler? Not a few argue that Europe produced a Nietzsche because of the Aristotelian Christianity created by Aquinas 650 years earlier.
Archbishop Vigano condemned Pope Francis and the Catholic church for apostasizing from orthodox Christian teaching. He got excommunicated. But Aquinas in 1277 also was excommunicated by the bishops of Paris and Oxford. Aquinas was condemned for heretical teachings against Augustine and orthodoxy with his ‘meritorious grace” doctrines and elevating reason to almost be on par with the scriptures. The argument of some (who agree with Church Doctors like Boneventure is that this “leaven” ultimately has led to the corruption we now see in the modern church. And it has led to an intellectual vacuum now being filled by people like Jordan Peterson. It is a fascinating story and Peter tries to jump in and explain it in his own words.
