As a testament to the government’s commitment to supporting young Filipino student-athletes through world-class training venues and cutting-edge academic infrastructure, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. conducted a comprehensive inspection of the state-of-the-art National Academy of Sports (NAS) facilities in New Clark City, Capas, Tarlac on July 14, 2026.
The President was joined by Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Juan Edgardo ‘Sonny’ Angara, Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) President and Chief Executive Officer Engineer Joshua ‘Jake’ Bingcang, and NAS Executive Director Francis Carlos ‘Kiko’ Diaz. Together, they inspected several sports facilities that showcase NAS’s holistic support system for developing champion-caliber athletes.
According to BCDA President and CEO Engr. Bingcang, Phase 1 of the project is now fully operational, covering the Academic and Administrative Buildings and the Multi-Sports Gymnasium. BCDA is nearing completion of Phase 2, which is 98 percent complete and includes the Gymnastics Hall, staff residences and the Sports Performance Building. These facilities are expected to expand NAS’s training capacity for School Year 2026–2027. Furthermore, BCDA is preparing for Phase 3, which will feature a five-storey student-athletes’ dormitory and dining hall that can accommodate up to 400 scholars.
Established under Republic Act No. 11470, NAS is the country’s premier institution for academically gifted student-athletes, combining quality education with specialized sports training on a single campus. For School Year 2026–2027, NAS provides full scholarships, dormitory housing, daily meals and snacks, and a monthly stipend of Php3,000 to 246 elite student-athletes. Its core training disciplines include seven (7) foundational sports: aquatics, athletics, badminton, gymnastics, judo, table tennis and taekwondo.
This investment has already yielded significant results, with NAS athletes securing 1,029 medals in national and international competitions in 2025. Notably, the Academy recently achieved a remarkable feat at the 2026 Palarong Pambansa, winning 26 medals, including 10 gold, five (5) silver, and 11 bronze. This accomplishment highlights NAS's rapid growth and the high standards of excellence in its sports program.
