🍗 Flying to Canada’s Only KFC Buffet | Aviation Adventure + Fast Food History ✈️
Thanks @therealsamreid & @twentyonepilots for the inspiration
Ever wondered what it’s like to fly across the Prairies just to eat at the only KFC buffet in Canada? Join me on this VFR flight from Steinbach, Manitoba to Weyburn, Saskatchewan as I combine my two passions — aviation and food — for one unforgettable day trip.
In this episode, I plan and fly my Cessna across busy Winnipeg airspace to track down one of the last surviving KFC buffets in North America. Along the way, I share insights about controlled airspace near Winnipeg, flight planning for small aircraft, and what it takes to manage a cross-country GA flight while still studying for my instrument rating.
Once in Weyburn, I meet the local KFC area coach Larry, who shares the incredible story of how this buffet survived since 1988 — including how Saskatchewan “snuck” the buffet concept into Canada, how it spread across the country, and how a viral campaign saved this one location from being shut down.
From crispy fried chicken and fresh hot buffet trays to the fascinating history of Colonel Sanders in Canada, this trip is as much about aviation freedom as it is about culinary nostalgia.
If you love aviation, general aviation VFR flying, KFC history, or food adventures, this video’s for you.
🛫 In this video:
Flight from Steinbach, MB (CJB3) to Weyburn, SK (CJE3)
Flight planning through busy Winnipeg airspace
Exploring the only KFC buffet left in Canada

![Scraping Cloud Bottoms At 1500 Above The Ground
Flying VFR into deteriorating weather is a constant game of what if. Join me in the Cessna 172 as I navigate low ceilings and heavy headwinds on a flight from Dryden to Steinbach.
In this flight, I’m pushing through marginal VFR conditions, scraping the bottom of a 1,500-foot cloud base. What started as a clear morning in Dryden quickly turned into a tactical exercise in weather briefing and mid-air reassessment. With a massive headwind slowing our ground speed to a crawl—literally slower than a bicycle at one point—the mission was to reach Steinbach North before the low-pressure system fully closed in.
Departure: Dryden Regional Airport (CYHD)
The Challenge: Managing a 47 mph headwind and dropping to 3,500ft to stay clear of the deck.
The Stopover: Landing at Kenora (CYQK) for a fuel top-up and a fresh weather brief.
The Arrival: Navigating the busy circuit at Steinbach North (CJB3) for a safe landing.
[Aviation Insights]
This video highlights why weather briefings are more than just a formality for VFR pilots. We look at:
Interpreting ceiling and visibility reports (METARs/TAFs).
The reality of flying at the edge of marginal VFR.
Decision-making: When to push on and when to stay put.
[Call to Action]
I’m back in Steinbach for a few weeks of advanced training with Harvs Air. Should I film my instructional flights? Let me know in the comments!
