Is it worth flying 150 miles just for a piece of fish? In today's flight, I take the Cessna 172 from Oshawa (CYOO) to Wiarton (CYVV) to pick up some fresh, wild-caught lake trout for dinner.

Winter flying in Ontario brings unique challenges, especially with the constant risk of airframe icing over the Great Lakes. I’ll walk you through my VFR flight planning, navigating around wispy clouds at 3,500 feet, and managing the cold-weather performance of a small aircraft.

Once on the ground in Wiarton, we head to Howell’s Fish—a third-generation family business at the base of the Bruce Peninsula. I chat with James about their traditional First Nations fishing rights, the art of smoking fish with applewood, and why wild-caught Great Lakes trout is a culinary staple in this region.

Finally, it’s back to the hangar to cook up this beautiful piece of trout. If you've ever wondered about the practical (and delicious) side of general aviation, this flight is for you.
