This sewing tutorial demonstrates how to sew the mock flat felled seam, which looks like a flat felled seam on the front of the fabric, but it's not reversible and it has fewer layers of fabric involved. It is therefore suited to using with more heavyweight fabrics like denim or canvas.
If you would like to remove even more bulk from the seam, you can finish just the one raw edge (with a zig-zag stitch, serger or pinking shears) instead, rather than both together, and trim the other edge down to a narrow width. Then fold & press the wider finished edge over the narrow unfinished edge and topstitch the 2 parallel lines.
