This knitting tutorial demonstrates how to knit simple pleats - made up of stockinette stitch and reverse stockinette stitch stripes - that fan out when stretched.
This is also an easy introduction to 'short rows' for beginners, since this pattern involves turning your work partway through the row. Short rows are basically where you knit part of the knitting more than another part, to create more complex shaping.
