I saw this interesting knitting technique in 'The Knitter' magazine, and it was referred to with the abbreviation TW2 (not to be confused with Tw2 which is a cable).
The process involves essentially passing a knit stitch through another knit stitch - not over or under like you do with cables - and the effect is a single diagonal strand of yarn on the front of your knitting. If you stack these on top of each other, i.e. you place them at the same point in the knitting on every right-side row, you get a sort of zigzag mock cable effect.
(Just note that this method is not actual cabling; cables have both strands of a stitch travelling across the front of the knitting, rather than just one strand.)
I also show you the TW3 which is the same concept but is created across 3 stitches rather than 2.
