Today’s review is meant to showcase that you don’t have to “break the bank” for a really nice single malt. Recently these two single malts were suggested to me by friends/patrons. The first one is the $80 age stated Glenturret 12-year-old. It's a really nice-looking bottle that comes in a fairly plain blue box. It sits at the heart of their 2024 core lineup that includes 8 malts ranging from the no age statement "Triple Wood" to a 7-year-old, and all the way up to the 30-year expression! This Glenturret 12 was aged in American and European Oak, it gets influences from both Oloroso & Pedro Ximenez seasoned casks. Glenturret's aim was to create a rich expression at 46.4% ABV (92.8 proof) that embodied the essence of their history and tradition.
As for the Glenglassaugh "Sandend," you can immediately tell that the first impression here was meant to impress! Not only does the box look clean and sophisticated, but the bottle also has an elegance to it - with a beautiful swirl built into the top half of the custom bottle! Now it doesn’t have an age statement, but we know it’s a malt that’s enriched by being aged in bourbon, sherry and manzanilla casks. It was bottled at a healthy 101 proof, and only retails around $65-$75! Oh, and if you're wondering, the name was inspired by the crescent beach of Sandend Bay where the distillery resides.
As of October 2024, my current bottle count is over 2,900. I am a Certified Specialist of Spirits and have also been accredited by the Tequila Regulatory Council (CRT). I've been actively collecting for three decades and what started as a small basic home bar has transformed (with the help and understanding of my wonderful wife) into this collection and career. Speaking of my career, I’m super proud to announce that my “Saints Alley “Nobleman” Rye Whiskey was named “Best American Rye” at the 2024 World Whisky Awards (Batch 4 should arrive in Total Wines in the first week of November)! But until then, don’t forget that our other Bourbons have also won multiple big awards and are on Total Wine shelves now! Our Flagship Port & Cognac just got a Double Platinum at Fred Minnick's 2024 Ascot Awards, and "The Herald” our Armagnac finished Bourbon took a Double Gold at the Whiskies of the World competition!
