Hitting the shelves just a few weeks back (7/11/22) in my area was the Balvenie 16 year “French Oak” Pineau Finish. It’s bottled at 47.6 proof and retails around $200-$250. This Scottish single malt began its journey in traditional American oak ex-bourbon barrels for 16 full years. From there, it spent several months more in Pineau casks. Pineau des Charentes is made with fresh, unfermented grape juice, (sometimes blended with lightly fermented grape must) to which a Cognac eau-de-vie is added and then matured in oak casks. The end result is a 17-20% abv fortified wine that’s semi-sweet (sometime slightly dryer - in the case of the white ones). They can be enjoyed as an aperitif, sometimes as a digestif, or even as a unique cocktail ingredient. Now let’s see what unique notes this 16-year Balvenie has picked up from those amazing casks!
