Today we’ll not only be doing a direct comparison of two Wild Turkey 8-year-old 101 proof expressions (both freshly opened), but I’ll also be comparing them to a bottle that’s been oxidizing a year - without my typical argon gas application that helps protect the whiskey from oxidation/degradation. Both expressions were purchased for around $50, but I have seen them as high as $75.
The Wild Turkey 70th Anniversary 8-year bourbon was 2024 limited-edition, 101-proof expression celebrating Jimmy Russell's 70th year with the distillery. It's crafted with a blend of 8 and 9-year-old barrels, hand-selected from some of Jimmy's favorite rickhouses. It shows and resulted in a more refined flavor profile compared to the standard Wild Turkey 8-year. That said, the standard 8-year 101 is no slouch at only $45-$50 and is a much more widely available expression. Regardless of which one you get to sip on, they offer a nice Wild Turkey experience with notes of caramel, citrus, vanilla, and spice.
