I was finally able to get hold of the rare Col. E.H. Taylor Amaranth "Grain of the Gods" Bourbon to review. It’s another Bottled-In-Bond (100 Proof) Bourbon that will only be released once at a MSRP of $70. It doesn’t have an official age statement, but it’s reported to be at least 10 years old. Now for the details...
Amaranth grain dates back as a food source to at least 8,000 years when it was most notably a staple crop of the Aztec civilization. After the fall of their society, it fell out of use and has since mostly only been cultivated and consumed in Peru. While Amaranth has many plant varieties including weeds and decorative houseplants, it’s the grain variety that is making a comeback as a "Super Food" in our society. As for the “Grain of the Gods” name, we must again look back at the Aztecs and their use of Amaranth as a sacred grain. During the month of Toxcatl (May 5-22), an effigy was made from Amaranth dough and dressed as Huitzilopochtli - their God of the Sun and War (and Bonus Points for the correct pronunciation of “Huitzilopochtli”). It was ceremoniously taken to the god’s temple and then eaten. It is this Amaranth grain that was substituted for the rye in Buffalo Trace’s “Mash Bill #1” recipe. While the exact recipe of Mash Bill #1 isn’t officially released, it most likely contains somewhere around 85-87% Corn, 8-10% Rye (Amaranth in this case) & 5-7% Barley. Regardless of the exact percentages, we’re looking at a Bourbon that has never been created before using Amaranth as the flavoring grain!
