Today we’re going to take a look at the Alberta Premium Canadian Rye Whisky in its purist form, cask strength. For this inaugural US release, it’s batched at a tongue numbing 130.2 Proof and retails between $55-$75. But don’t let that proof scare you away, as it handles water well so feel free to add a splash or serve it on the rock/s. To create it, they start with 100% locally grown Canadian rye that is mashed with Rocky Mountain spring water before being distilled. From there, it’s aged for a minimum of five years before being batched and bottled without the addition of any water. According to their website, “Alberta Premium decided to release a Cask Strength in an effort to innovate within the Canadian Whisky category. With a deep history rooted in heritage and quality, Alberta Premium is proud to be a major player in the resurgence of Canadian Whiskies and Alberta Premium Cask Strength is the award-winning result. It is a true reflection of what a distillery can be-we laid our cards on the table and delivered a world-class product.” That sounds like a solid goal, so let’s see if the whisky inside this faceted glass bottle is a worthy debut.
