Recently I received these two bottles as a gift from a great bourbon friend (not affiliated with the industry or the distillery). And since they’re still around, I decided to do a review on them. The Redwood Empire distillery is located in Sonoma Country in northern California, and they name their releases after some of the largest trees in the Redwood Empire - which stretches from San Francisco to Humbolt Bay and on to the Oregon border.
Today we’ll be taking a look at their 2 of their 3 Cask Strength offerings, “Pipe Dream” (a bourbon) & “Lost Monarch” (a blend of “Pipe Dream” bourbon and their “Emerald Giant” rye - which review another time. We’ll start with Batch 001 of “Pipe Dream” Bourbon. It’s made from a mash bill of 74% corn, 20% raw rye, 4.5% malt barley, and 1.5% wheat that is aged for a minimum of 4 years with some components as old as twelve. It’s bottled at 116.8 proof and retails between $70 - $100.
The second one will be Batch 001 of the Cask Strength “Lost Monarch” - which again is simply a blend of “Pipe Dream” Bourbon & “Emerald Giant” Rye Whiskey. Components of this blend are also in the 3- to 12-year-old range and the two different mash bills are: The Bourbon is 74% corn, 20% raw rye, 4.5% malt barley, and 1.5% wheat. The Rye is 94% rye, 5% malted barley, and 1% wheat. It’s bottled at 117.2 proof and retails for around $70-$90.

Currently, our two new Special Editions are almost gone. But don’t worry, we just created Batch 2’s of both! Our "Nobleman" Rye Whiskey was aged in Hungarian Tokaji (pronounced Tok-eye) sweet wine casks! The other is a twist on our "Herald" Bourbon that adds Pineau Des Charentes casks to the mix. All are delicious, and given my knowledge and high standards, you know I’m working hard with my team to continue releasing whiskeys that we're proud of!
