In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, I decided to pull down some Irish whiskies of varying prices to show you what you get at different price levels.
At $17, we start with the Paddy Irish Whiskey bottled at 80 proof. It’s a combination of column and pot distilled grain and malt whiskies aged between 4 and 7 years.
At $24 we have the standard Jameson’s Irish Whiskey bottled at 80 proof. It also uses pot and column distilled whiskies with some aging in ex-bourbon and some in ex-sherry casks for around 5-7 years.
At $48 we step up to the Bushmills 10-year-old bottled at 80 proof. It’s made using only malted barley in copper pot stills that are then aged in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks. Once mature, they are carefully selected to blend into their classic profile.
At $62 we have the Powers John’s Lane 12-year-old bottled at 92 proof. It’s all copper pot distilled whiskey that’s aged in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry cask maturation going into its blend.
At $100 the Tyrconnell 10 Year Madeira Finished whiskey is bottled at 92 proof aged and in ex-bourbon casks before being finished in Madeira casks.
At $125 the “Exclusive Malts” Single Cask is a great example of what independent bottlers can release. In this case The Creative Whisky Co. has bottled a single cask of copper pot distilled 13-year-old Irish whiskey that was aged in a refill sherry cask. It’s natural color, non-chillfiltered and a nice cask strength of 105.6 proof.
At $330 we hit the upper tier of quality in the Redbreast 21 year. The whiskey in each bottle is all from a single distillery and made from copper pot stills. It’s aged between 21 and 28 years in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks before being blended to create this award-winning whiskey.
