Did you know that you can search the entire database of every completed Access to Information & Privacy (ATIP) request the Canadian federal government has ever filed?!
By using the database provided at www.open.canada.ca, you can search nearly 50,000 completed ATIPs, and by using the included form, request any record be provided to you.
Because the records in question are already completed, and redacted where required, they are typically provided much faster than actual ATIP replies, with a turnaround measured in days, rather than months or years. Also, they're free, as compared to ATIP requests that must be accompanied by a $5 fee.
Looking through existing records can help narrow the focus of a potential ATIP, or help identify new lines of questioning for future ATIPs, or in the rare case simply save you the $5 ATIP fee if you find someone's already asked your exact question!
