It's officially launched! This is episode one of the Calibre podcast; a series of conversations about firearms in Canada; everything from their design and the business around them to their role in Canadian culture, historical and current, and of course, the politics around it all.
For the first episode, we're chatting with Phil O'Dell - a second-generation gun guy whose father worked on projects like the EM-2 bullpup prototype rifle for Canadian Arsenals, and who now sports among the longest firearms-centric resumés in the country.
After cutting his teeth in his dad's shop, he eventually landed at Diemaco during what was the brand's arguable heyday, when the C7 rifle was still a relatively new product. Working through those early years that saw Diemaco earn some of its first Special Operations procurement contracts, Phil eventually departed Diemaco, and would come to play a role in distributing the first civilian market rifles Colt Canada (nee-Diemaco) would produce some years later with the company that bears his name (in more ways than you first think): O'Dell Engineering Limited.
