Oooooff! Well, after a very long delay, here is my attempt at this epic Genesis track. This is a deceptively difficult one to play, as it turns out!
I have had to split the video into two, which is a shame, but at 11 mins total, YouTube won't accept it - sorry!
This Genesis track has caused me LOTS of problems. I have done what?, 70 videos now - and this is the only one that seems to have taken me a whole month to learn! It is not that it is especially technically dificult (compared to most other Genesis!), but it is like a mini-symphony, and all the bridges and fills and things are different and there are endless subtleties to learn. For me, this has been about trying to get 'the notes' into my thick skull, so that I actually deploy them all at the right moment. Damned hard to memorise it all though, or maybe I am getting old - it is my 44th birthday tomorrow!! (Pants, I'm getting old.....)
Chester plays this piece with beautiful skill - wonderful delicate touch in the verses and his usual power and ease in all the exciting bits. It's a joy to listen to.
The little hi-hat things at 0'50 and 1'44 (and also the final verse) I find really hard, for reasons that escape me: Chester has a perfect touch here. I tried all sorts of ways to play it, but none seem to sound the same: maybe my hats are dustbin lids, or maybe I am shit, or maybe both!!!!
I make a mistake at 2'44 - see if you can spot it!
The key triplet fill thing at 3'05 is really, really tough to catch IMHO. I get the impression that Chester was almost improvising up that point (bet he played it differently every gig!), and he got out of a tight spot wonderfully well! Certainly I found this point one of the hardest to get right in the whole song. It does not help that the lead-up to it involves lots of messing around with the bass drum, inverting where it falls between the splashing hi-hat and rolling around the toms: it's all a bit bleeding hectic!!
I am ALWAYS out of time at 5'11! Is it just me, or does it happen to you lot as well?!
I get the impression that the mix is different on this track, compared to most of the rest of Three Sides Live. The drums seem beautifully quiet at times.
Anyway, this is one I have never really studied before, just 'sort of played along' for 20 years, unlike the others you have seen me do, which I did know quite well. I certainly under-estimated it!
