As I said on Part 1 of this drum cover, I have had to split this 11 minute track into two for the purposes of YouTube - apologies.
I have already said on Part 1 of this video how beautiful this track is, and how wonderfully Chester plays it. I have already said that it is actually a track that I seriously under-estimated: learning this has proved a bummer!
This second video contains the part of the song that I suspect most of us love the most: it's hectic and exciting and there is lots of drumming happening! Phil Collins presumably also arrives on his kit at various moments during this bit, and that certainly adds to the difficulty when trying to copy it all!
As I said on the first vid, it is really hard to memorise when to play what fill, and Chester is playing with a wonderful touch that's just impossible for me to capture. With Phil's usual additions thrown in, it is very hard to keep on top of what is coming in the next bar. It is for this reason that I look horribly serious throughout this video: I am concentrating like a bastard on the next bar whilst trying to play the current bar correctly!!!
Hands up if you always hit the crash a bar too early at 0'29! I managed to get it right here, but damn me, I often don't!! I swear the band all change key a bar too late!!
I love the section around 1'22! Banks' keyboard part here is real 'sing-along' stuff, and the drums move in and out of the beat brilliantly.
At 1'32 I often find my arms won't play what my brain is telling them to play, and if I think too hard here, I cannot play it. It's actually very simple, yet somehow, it ain't!! Got to cross over onto snare for one note, keep the 'ands' going on open hi-hat, make sure the left hand plays the correct 16th notes, with accent on the last, and make sure NOT to play the 16th note you right hand is desperate to play on snare: just 'pretend' play it (in the air!).................nothing much, I suppose.
Chester's epic fill at 1'42 is just awesome, and I love playing it: the accoustics of my room make it tough to hear my double bass hits here, which is a real shame. I assure you I have played it correctly (to my ears at least!).
I make a mistake at 1'54. Pants.
And another one at 2'40. Double pants.
At 3'25 I wallop the hi hat instead of ease back into things! Why the hell did I do that?!
At 4'52 I make a mess of things, but kind of get away with it, I think! Shame though.
The finale is a scream to play. It's a good moment for pulling a face: I see I look like I am giving birth to a small house as I build into it, and then you have to start giving it heaps with that rolling bass drum and crash cymbal work and a few snare hits thrown in for good measure. I can't emulate what is going on exactly because both Phil and Chester are having a laugh here, but you get the gist!
Anyway, the main thing is that I appear to arrive at the end by hitting the cymbal tops IN TIME with Mr. Banks' keyboards! Amazing! Wonderful! I usually mess that bit up!
All in all, this is not as accuarate as I had hoped to post, but getting even this onto camera has done my head in. So this will have to do! If I get too many negative comments, I may have another go next week!!
