And here is the second video in this series of videos showing my attempt at covering the songs on the Protos album 'The Noble Pauper's Grave'. For full details of how this project came about please see the first video, 'The Rally'. Suffice to say, Protos themselves asked me to do this :-)
This is wholly different to 'The Rally', as I am sure you will notice! Fast, furious, hectic and with some very awkward changes. And, very noticeable in this one, is the fact that the drums on the original are programmed, and hence they are like a metronome. I keep getting ahead and behind the beat, and this is infuriating! Oh well :-)
The 'bosanova' intro is fun, and I couldn't but help try and do the five stroke roll thing, with the accents thrown in. It was really REALLY hard to come out of the bosonova and do the single stroke roll leading into the main section of the song. The metronomic programmed drums just don't lay back AT ALL, and you can really hear me desperately trying to keep up with them!!
I love the skipping ride cymbal thing. That's on the original, I might add. But again you can hear me losing the tempo with those programmed drums :-(
Going into that big run down thing, with the three feel, is horribly awkward, and catching the crash accents took some practise. Then of course there is the part with the four 'big' fills. Three of these are 'my own' and I departed markedly from the original. The third one, with the three open hi hat things, is the same as the original, though I chose to do it in a different place. Again, you can hear the metronomic original drums in the background! It was so hard to get the timing right coming out of these fills.
I couldn't help myself in the next 'three' feel run down. Some big fills to find the crash accents, and an eight feel bass drum throughout. I'm especially fond of the tom accents I throw in between these crash accents - I think they work really well. This section s all a significant departure from the original, and I hope is acceptable to Steve and Rory!
The outro just felt like it HAD to have those double bass hits beneath the skipping ride thing. That's not on the original :-) Neither are the extra bass hits in the final couple of notes. Man, that took some practice!!
The look I give the camera at the end - between you and me, this was my 7000th take, and I was hopping mad :-) I had been so relaxed in rehearsals, but as soon as the camcorder was 'on', I had no idea how to hold the sticks, what fill progression to play, which hand was my eft hand etc etc. I was MIGHTY relieved to finally get something on camera. But I am frustrated - my tension shows throughout the song. Oh well.....
I apologise profusely for the camera angle - my bass drum beater is not in view, which is not intentional. You can actually see the second beater in the outro! The first beater must be like 1mm out of shot. Doh!
I also apologise for the audio synch. YouTube have moved the audio about 1/100th of a second, and it shows, at this tempo. Pants and double pants.
