If I am honest, I have to say that Domino Parts 1 & 2 really are one of my favourite Genesis tracks. Probably it's sacrilege to say this - we are all supposed to love the old stuff I guess! (BTW, my definition of 'old' is anything older than Abacab). There is something about this live track: Phil's superb vocals, Tony's fantastic keyboards, Chester's powerful drums - it's just epic, if you ask me.
Anyway, I love drumming along to it. And I have always, always found it to be tough. Especially the end.
Part I is a gentle start. Yet even here, there is something a little tricky. It's those turnabouts around 1:05 and 2:20 - if you try and play the bass drum (which is, I think, actually a drum machine) just before the big tom hits, you can get in a mess (or at least, I can!). I find them really awkward to play!
The two 'signature' fills are of course extremely important, leading from one verse to the next. Being such important fills, I chose to cock-up the first one at 1:30 by hitting drums in the wrong sequence, which is bleeding annoying....
When the full beat comes in with the eights on hi hat, it is wonderful how laid back Chester's snare hits are: it is very easy to come in too early, and after each fill, you have to be real careful to hit the snare 'late'. He really is The Man......
The music in my vid is very loud, because by the time this gets to the hectic end of Part II, my drumming was drowning it all out. Unfortunately, this means the bass drum is pretty quiet. Pants.
Anyway, hope you enjoy - now go watch Part II for the real excitement!
