This is Part 1 of a two part Medley. The real exciting stuff is in Part 2, ok?!! You'll find it on my Genesis Playlist, on my Channel :-)
Before anyone lays into me, please note that this first part of the medley is NOT THE SAME as the Three Sides Live version - which is why you will notice some important differences in the drum part to what we are all well used to!
So, where to start with describing this wonderful Medley? I was in the audience at Wembley Stadium in 1987 when they played this, and it was the highlight of the night, as far as I was concerned (and indeed, many others!). A few months later, Radio 1 or someone put the whole concert out on air, and thankfully I recorded it. On a audio cassette though, 'cos that's all we had back then! For that reason, it has been difficult to get the sound quality right on this vid, though all things considered, it ain't that bad!
The In The Cage section is very similar to the Three Sides Live (TSL) version, but there are subtle differences, mostly near the start (the use of the hi tom accents, being doubled up, and the fact that they carry on even once the snare gets going).
I make a point of TRYING to play the horribly fast bass drum work in the verses (Raindrops keep falling on my head. and Round..round..round..etc - those bits) with just the ONE bass drum pedal. If you recall, on my TSL version of In The Cage, I cheated and played this with double pedals! Sometimes I find I can do it, and other times, my foot kind of goes into a spasm and cant keep up! Still, got to try, eh?! I notice watching this back that you can see that the beater is moving at all the right times, but it does not always fully connect with the drum head. Also, I find that once I am over on the ride cymbal, and hitting those crashes, the shift in balance at my waist makes the fast bass drum work here incredibly difficult. I often wonder if I should sit higher or lower - would this help?!
But basically, Chester plays this bit supremely, and I have NEVER been able to play it with one foot properly :-(
The only other real differences in the drum part relate to the lovely use of snare ghost notes during the Raindrops bit, and then, thankfully, a much reduced use of the double bass drum roll that takes the medley out of In The Cage. It only lasts for 2 bars instead of like 6 in TSL! If you recall my TSL video, you will remember that my feet could not quite keep up with things, and I started to lose it 5 bars into the roll!!!
The we go into the Quiet Earth section of the Medley - and for that, you need to go watch the Part 2 video - it's there on my Channel!
Apologies for the huge wait for this video, and indeed any video. It's now been exactly 3 months since my last post! You all know why this is (see my 'Protest' video) and this combined with my technical problems over recent weeks has compounded the delays.
