Well, I admit it's been a long time since I uploaded any videos! Apologies. Anyway, I've actually been busy working on this 1986 Medley (though I use the Seconds Out Supper's Ready bit - see below), which contains In The Cage, In That Quiet Earth, Apocalypse 9/8 and the end of Supper's Ready. I recorded it about three weeks ago, BUT I recorded it WITHOUT the original music playing on the video.....

Why? Well, I'm teaming up with some other YouTube musicians to actually play this whole medley ourselves, without the original music. So I laid down the drum track a few weeks ago, and now the keyboards and guitar are being played on top, somewhere in the USA! Wild, eh? We are currently auditioning our 'Phil Collins' (singer), so hopefully it will not be long until we release the whole virtual tribute band onto the net :-)

In the meantime, I thought I would record some of it again, in my normal way, so you can see the exciting 9/8 bit and the end of Supper's Ready, as a kind of preview. I guess I could have up-loaded my recording of a few weeks ago, but it is WEIRD - me drumming along to 20 minutes of Genesis, with no background music to be heard! (I am listening to the music on headphones).

You may have seen my video of the whole of the Seconds Out version of Supper's Ready a few years back. I also did some seperate vids of just the 9/8 section, as it was so 'interesting' (bleeding difficult). Anyway, today my sound system is a lot better, my bass drum is mic'ed up and I think I play it better - so hopefully it is of interest to at least some of you :-)

There are plenty of mistakes - I'll leave you to point them all out to me! And yes, I actually edited this a bit - the Eggs section has been 'added' to the end of the 9/8 bit, 'cos basically I was not happy with my first version of Eggs!! So yes, there is a bit of a jump at the join, 'cos my editing skills are crap :-)

I have approached Phil's solo in the 9/8 section a little differently in places. Of particular note is the fast poly-rhythm thing, which last time I played WITHOUT ghost notes on snare, but this time I played the ghost notes AND the hi hat and had to swop between right hand and left hand for the backbeats on the 3, 5 and 9. Fun :-)

The begining of this vid is the end of In That Quiet Earth, and when the 9/8 starts up, you will see after a few bars that I reach out to turn the volume up! Had to be done. For the pedants among you, this is actually NOT the 1986 medley. It is actually the 1986 medley only for a few bars of 9/8, then it is spliced into the Seconds Out version which turns out to be at a quieter volume!). This is because I could not adjust to playing the 86 version of Apocalypse for our virtual band (not without another three months practice anyway!). Phil played it quite differently, and it blew my mind trying to re-learn / re-adjust a 9/8 part that I have lived with for 25 years! So I have kind of cheated!

For those of you wondering why I did not play the buzz roll as it goes into 'Eggs' - (a) buzz rolls with Flix are very hard for me to do, (b) the roll tends to be way to loud and drowns out the music and (c) I am just not very good at buzz rolls! So I left it out!

Finally, a few words about 'Eggs'. Those that do not know this very well might think this is the easy bit. Wrong. This slow massive groove by Chester Thompson is incredibly beautiful and incredibly difficult. Chester plays it with a lazy power that is just awesome. Capturing his groove here I find extremely difficult - it is all too easy to rush it and get ahead as you come out of the fills. Especially the 'Jerusalem' fill, which, frankly, is terrifying to play. I consider 'Eggs' to be one of the toughest drum parts to cover of any of the covers I have done - yes, really. You try it!

By the way, did I say I love 'Eggs?' No? I LOVE EGGS IS EGGS!!!!!! :-)

The sticks are fluo Flix sticks - made in Scotland and perfect for YouTube vids like this :-)

Hope you enjoy. Will probably post In That Quiet Earth next weekend :-)
