Here is something very different! An original track, not a cover. AND, a new set of fancy signature drumsticks from The London Drumstick Company, who have just announced me as an official LDC Artist :)
'Guano' have been around for quite a few years now here in the East Midlands, UK. Brainchild of Simon Faulks, they play a wide range of stuff, all of it original, all of it written by Simon. I joined the band in late 2018, and I have loved every second of it. With new bass player Stephen Waterfield, we have had a lot of fun learning Simon's old tracks, and even more fun creating parts for Simon's new tracks. It makes such a change from playing covers :)
This track always stood out to me as one where I really wanted the drums to play a big part. I changed the groove from the original in the verses and kept attempting different things to create what I kept imagining the part should be. But I did not have the skill or vocabulary. Every time we played it, I kept thinking "I need to play a much more interesting fill there, or there' but I never quite got it right. It's taken me months to reach a point where I think the drum part is how I always imagined it should be. It's fair to say that I have now turned Simon's rather brilliant track, into something of a drum-fest!!!! Thankfully he forgives me, and he previewed this video before I made it public - he likes it, quite a lot, I believe :)
As some of you may know, I am self taught. Never had any lessons, had dreadful technique and awful habits. Then in February this year when I was performing (as an edrummer) at a drum clinic, I met Gabor Dornyei, who was performing after me........Well, I loved the guy immediately. We chatted, and I just knew he was the first guy I've ever met who I thought 'yes, please, please teach me, master.' We've been hanging out now since March, and he has opened my eyes to a whole new universe. It's truly changing my playing and technique and confidence and vocabulary. And two of the fills in this track happen to be variants of ones he taught me. If I did not have the vocabulary, I would never have thought to play 'em. They sit perfectly in the track to my ears. Gabs - I loves ya!!!!

The LDC sticks are 7A front loaded, hickory, with two layers of custom acrylic paint. I love them! After three weeks of hard playing, with the same pair, there is hardly a blemish on them and nothing on the kit. Wonderful. And I'm mighty proud to be an official LDC Artist - not many of us edrummers get stick endorsements!!
