Here is a 'drums only' view of an excerpt from the most recent 30 minute long iGenesis video - 'The Story of Albert', otherwise known as 'The Duke Suite'. So you have here the Drum Duet, plus Duke's Travels and Duke's End, showing both 'Phil' and 'Chester' (or at least, my interpretation of how they played this live). This is cover of Genesis arguably at their best.
The audio that you hear is all iGenesis. So you can all properly listen to what I played and analyse all those little areas where I don't play it quite right :-)
Before you do that though - you need to note the following: the drum duet is a 'replica' of the short duet they played when performing this suite live in 1980. So no huge 1987 duet here, ok?! Duke's Travels I have mostly played as Phil played it on the studio version. This is because in my view the studio version of the drumming is far superior to the live version - I love all the intricate bass pedal work and off-beat crashes and things.
You will note that 'Chester' plays some blocks. This is roughly what he did live in 1980.
As Travels progresses and comes to a climax, I have played a combined version of Phil's studio drumming and Chester's live drumming, plus some of my own fills - in an attempt to get the close of Travels to 'work' in the way iGenesis wanted to play it. This is why it may sound unfamiliar, especially to anyone who has not heard how Chester played it :-)
Duke's End has 'Phil' and 'Chester' going all-out. The audio goes a bit funny here, because I have turned the drums up in the mix and there are phasing issues as a result. Nothing I can do about that - I have just plonked my drum mix on top of the full band mix, and turned up the drums! It worked for all of it, except Duke's End!!!
My big smile at the end is a big smile at the end. I could not believe I had just managed to get it all on camera. This was my first take (after many weeks of practise) - and to say I was overwhelmed would be an under-statement. This is pretty much the best 10 minutes of drumming I have ever played. I'm not ashamed to admit I am very, very proud of this :-)
