Here is another Shadows video, recorded during a recent session where I did 10 tracks in two days for a new Shadows album for one of my bands. This is video 7.
Man of Mystery is fun to play. Apart from that middle section! Playing this live always scares me, because it is very difficult to keep calm and keep track of where the hell you are once you get into that section. Intricate bell doubles, awkward tom doubles, wondering whether you have chosen the correct bar to come out on.......! Try as I might, I have never been able to just 'feel' my way out of this. I literally have to count the bars, as if my life depended on it, and then come out come hell or high water, praying the rest of the band are with me. It's hard enough just playing along to a backing track, but live, there is always this fear that either I lose count or the band lose count, and we all emerge from the frantic section in a different place! Never happened to me so far, but one of these days.....!!!!
The backing track is original Shadows, with the drums (mostly) removed. So what you hear on this video is 95% my drums, and just a few artefacts from the original drums. I used XTrax Stems II software. Please listen with quality headphones if you can!
