My INTERPRETATION of this incredible live track by Genesis. It is not note for note by any means; I have not studied video footage and I have not seen transcriptions. This is learnt 'by ear'. So go easy on me!
In my view this is one of the greatest pieces of rock music ever created, and this live performance is absolutely stunning. The drums by Phil & Chester obviously are epic, awesome, mind-numbingly great etc, but then again, the huge bass, the beautiful keyboards, the immense guitar and of course the vocals, are just sublime. Phil is not just a great drummer -- his singing on this is absolutely brilliant.
I had to split this cover somewhere to fit it on YouTube, and so chose the end of Lover's Leap for Part 1, and the end of Willow Farm for Part 2. Part 3 obviously has the epic 9/8 and Eggs is Eggs bit. The vids overlap slightly and this is all one take. Hope the splits do not take away too much from your enjoyment.
APOCALYPSE IN 9/8 -- well, what can I say? I mean, you got to be pretty warped in the head to come up with this! Genius, though, utter genius.
I have tried to play what I consider to be Phil's solo, over Chester's steady 9/8. Someone is bound to correct me on various points, but this is what I hear, and what I have attempted to play. This take does not contain my 'definitive' version -- there are a few awful moments in it :-( but I think just about get away with them :-) When recording a 24 minute track, you got to be Phil Collin's himself to get it spot on every second of the song, and I ain't Phil!

AS SURE AS EGGS IS EGGS - I make no apology for this -- I FUCKING LOVE THIS. This is Genesis at their most powerful and awesome. It makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. It brings tears to my eyes when Phil sings 'Can't you feel our souls ignite?' and again at 'Lord of Lords, King of Kings' and yet again at 'Jerusalem'. Phil's singing, and those bass notes, I mean, it is just so fucking EPIC......
Anyway, the drumming, at first glance, is straightforward. Except that this is Chester and it's the end of Supper's Ready. He plays the most massive groove, with beautiful cymbals and big toms and a lazy bass drum. I find it immensely difficult to emulate his sound and feel on this and it is all about groove. Hands up if you find that when you play to this, it sounds crap and out of time - both my hands are up!
Between you and me, the drums on 'Eggs' are just about the most beautiful piece of drumming I have ever, ever heard, frankly.
Those of you who followed my 'blog' as I learned this will know I had all sorts of problems with the big fill after 'Jerusalem'. Suffice to say, if I hear Phil say the word 'Jerusalem' again, I may spontaneously combust..........
My timing is not great at the end -- I am full of adreneline 'cos I know I am almost home and dry, and it's very very hard to keep the timing tight when the groove is so lazy and epic. Chester -- I want to have your babies.......
